Do’s and don’ts of home decorating

Do’s and don’ts of home decorating

Taking care of your home decor can be quite exhilarating. However, it can be quite daunting, as well as hideous if not handled carefully. To start with, there are a variety of mistakes that you can make. In addition, these mistakes can make your space look awkward, small and weird. To help you, check out our list of the do’s and don’ts of home decorating, to get you started in the right direction.

1. Don’t use white decor if you have kids or pets

White rugs, upholstery or paint are not ideal if you have either children or pets. In terms of aesthetics white looks amazing, but it is not practical in a home with young children.

2. Don’t hang small pieces of art on large walls

One of the most significant mistakes that you can make is not utilising the right pieces to adorn the walls. If you have a large wall then you should use large pieces of art. In addition, if you have small walls then it is important to use small pieces of decorative art. A mismatch in proportions will make the space look disproportionate and awkward.

3. Don’t forget architectural details

Another important consideration is your architecture of a space. Whatever your architectural configurations, make sure the lines and silhouettes are appropriate. In addition, the entire space has to be in sync with the decor.

4. Don’t go overboard

Simply because you can do something doesn’t necessarily mean that you should. Functionality and relevance should always be at the core of your thought processes. Remember that simplicity and minimalist design and decor are the in thing at the moment.

5. Don’t be afraid to use colour

Colour is an excellent expression of our personalities and an extension of ourselves. Any space that is left without colour feels and looks bland and feels empty. As such don’t be afraid to use colour at the risk of over-using it. To achieve the maximum balance I recommend you use one anchor and two accent colour.

6. Do: layer lighting

In most instances, rooms in a home are lit by a single overhead light. In as much as this will probably get the job done, it does tend to leave the space feeling flat. As an alternative, you should consider using varying angled lights from a table or free-standing lamps. This has the added bonus of giving the space dimension, as well as warmth.

7 Do: hang curtains high and wide

Most people don’t realise that there is an intricate art to window dressings. Your placement of drapes and curtains surely makes a huge impact in making your home look amazing. In addition, the colours, fabrics, and textures of your windows dressings make a huge difference in adding beauty and elegance to your home. To create a sense that your room is tall, hang your curtains high. Furthermore, if you want a room to appear wide place the curtains as far and wide as you possibly can.

8. Do: use textures

Mixing various textures in your decor is an excellent way for you to keep things interesting. Textures create sufficient interest and quickly transform a space from being plain and boring.

9. Do: draw the eye with an interesting piece

You must also not forget the importance of an axial view. When you enter a space a delightful object should catch your eye and draw you forward. Examples of eye-catching pieces include light fixtures, sculptures or anything that can define a space.

10. Do: trust your instinct

Lastly, be true to yourself and trust your instincts. At the end of the day each individual is unique and our living space should reflect that. Respect your points of view and introduce them into your decor.
