Geographic location

From Lusaka it is approximately 570 kilometres to the fast-growing urban city of Chipata. If you’re travelling from Malawi, then Chipata is just a mere 30 kilometres from the border.

History

The Ngoni word ‘Chimpata’ is the source of the name Chipata, meaning large space. Accordingly this is in reference to Chipata’s geographic location as a valley between two hills.

Named after the 19th-century British politician and adventurer. Fort Jameson is the former name of Chipata. According to the 2010 general census, Chipata has a population of roughly 455,783. This subsequently makes Chipata, the 3rd largest city in the country behind Lusaka and Kitwe.

Trade

Attractions

Zambia has a rich and diverse cultural heritage. One of the most awesome spectacles to behold is the Nc’wala ceremony of the Ngoni people. Held at the end of February, the ceremony celebrates the first fruits harvest. Also, Kanjala hill offers fantastic and breathtaking views of Chipata. This is ideal for hiking, mountain biking and picnics. In addition you can visit Kapata market, which gives you a glimpse into a typical african market. Items sold at the market include; fruits and vegetables, arts and crafts, and clothing items.
