Aspects of interior design

Interior design is all about improving the inside of a property to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment. Aspects of interior design are achieved through the elements  of design. Here’s our blog article on the principles and aspects of interior design.

Design principles include;

  • balance
  • space
  • rhythm
  • emphasis
  • unity
  • contrast
  • scale and proportion
  • details
  • alternation
  • repetition

1. Balance

In the first place we look at the principle of balance. Balance refers to the ordered distribution of elements of equal visual weight. The objective is to achieve visual equilibrium. Balance is only achieved when the visual weight of the elements are evenly distributed along a central axis or point that can be both real and imaginary. We examine balance in three ways;  symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial.

Symmetrical balance

Firstly, we explore symmetrical balance which is achieved when a space is divided into two equal halves and things are mirrored along a central axis. Both halves are equally compensated to give out a calm, stable and dignified feel to the living space.

Asymmetrical balance

Secondly, with asymmetrical balance, any odd number of elements can be used by keeping an imaginary central axis as the focal point. In most instances complex shapes seem heavier and thus they are used to accomplish asymmetrical balance.

Radial balance

Lastly, distributed arrangement of items around a central focal point in circular symmetry. Radial balance disposition of items can either extend outward or inward.

2. Space

Next we look at space. With space we examine the area in and around a room. We assess form, length, width, height and dimensions of space.

3. Scale and proportion

Then we evaluate scale and proportion as an extension of space. The objective is to see to it that items placed in a space belong together. For instance, if you go with high ceilings then you need high rise furniture to maintain harmony.

4. Rhythm

We also investigate rhythm which suggests a connection between different elements. Interior spaces can have order, interest and focus applied by introducing rhythm. Components repeated in an orderly fashion and the spaces between them create a perception of rhythm. The core elements used to achieve rhythm are, repetition, alternation and progression.

5. Unity

The principle of unity stresses on the fact that there should be a sense of uniformity or harmony. Interior design  serves as a visual guide for a person to understand a living space. All the elements used should complement one another and a smooth transition should exist from one to another.

6. Alternation

Furthermore, create rhythm by interspersing two or more elements in a regular pattern.

7. Emphasis

You can use emphasis to create a central piece. The focal point must play the role of an attention grabber. Elements like colour, pattern and texture must be used to emphasise a particular focal point.

8. Contrast

Contrast alludes to the distinction in the colour of entities that differentiates them. Colour, form and space are three elements that can achieve contrast in interior design. For example you can use two opposite colours to achieve contrast and make an object distinguishable.

9. Repetition

Repetition is the easiest and simplest way to attain rhythm. Iteration of any of the elements of design can achieve repetition.

10. Details

Each and every detail adds a little bit of life to the overall design. Details add their own distinctive features to the overall composition.
